HB55 creates the Alabama Squat Truck Law, prohibiting raising the front fender height by four inches or more compared to the rear, with penalties and exemptions, effective October 1, 2024.
It makes it unlawful to operate a passenger car or truck on Alabama highways if the front fender is raised four or more inches above the rear by altering the suspension, frame, or chassis. The fender height is measured vertically from the ground through the wheel center to the bottom of the front fender. There is an exemption for modifications made for bona fide commercial or agricultural purposes. Violations carry escalating fines (up to $50 for a first offense, up to $100 for a second, and up to $250 for third or subsequent offenses) and the act is a new crime. The law takes effect on October 1, 2024 and is named the Alabama Squat Truck Law.
