SB31 would prohibit knowingly possessing a machine gun and related conversion parts in Alabama, establish a Class C felony for violations, and provide exemptions and an effective date.
It defines a machine gun to include weapons that shoot automatically or can be restored to shoot, along with the frame/receiver and parts used to convert a firearm into a machine gun. It prohibits any person from knowingly possessing a machine gun or those parts. Violations would be punishable as a Class C felony. There are exemptions for law enforcement officers acting in official capacity and for machine guns lawfully owned or possessed under federal law, and the act would take effect on October 1, 2025.
