AL Democrats Announce Candidates for PSC 1 & 2
The Alabama Democratic Party announced its primary candidates for two seats on the Alabama Public Service Commission (PSC). The primary will be held May 19.
Democrats are fielding candidates for PSC at a time when utility rates are a growing concern in the state. The three candidates are John Northrop and Jeff Ramsey for Place 1, and Sheila McNeil for Place 2.
McNeil, who previously served on the San Antonio, Texas City Council and chairs the Madison County Democrats, said she wants to give Alabamians a choice on the ballot and a voice on the PSC. “I believe power should rest with the public, not with power companies,” McNeil said.
Ramsey, a Mobile native known as thatalabamafella on social media, said he wants to represent working-class families. He said Alabamians see their power bills rise while elected officials are absent. Ramsey has over 128,000 followers on TikTok.
Northrop said Alabama residents pay more for electricity than the national average despite being one of the poorest states. He called for transparent regulation and thoughtful energy policies.
Tabitha Isner, Vice Chair of the Alabama Democratic Party, said the party has received an outpouring of interest in the race. She cited the economy stretching Alabamians to their breaking point as one reason for the interest.
The Public Service Commission regulates utilities in Alabama, including Alabama Power and Spire. Commissioners are elected statewide to four-year terms. The Republican primary for PSC will also take place May 19. The general election is Nov. 3, 2026.
