Description

Under existing law, Athens State University is included under the definition of a junior college or trade school

This bill would remove Athens State University from under the jurisdiction, supervision, and control of the State Board of Education and Department of Postsecondary Education

This bill would provide for the mission of the university

This bill would create and provide for the governance of the university under the Board of Trustees of Athens State University

This bill would provide for certain powers and duties of the board, meetings of the board, and for a quorum for the transaction of business

This bill would provide for the filling of vacancies on the board and for the creation and use of a nominating committee to fill vacancies on the board

This bill would provide for the appointment and duties of a president of the university

This bill would provide for the employment of suitable persons to act as police officers for the university

This bill would also authorize the Code Commissioner to revise references to Athens State University in the Code of Alabama 1975, as appropriate, to reflect the changed status of the university

To amend Section 16-60-110, Code of Alabama 1975, to remove Athens State University from under the jurisdiction, supervision, and control of the State Board of Education and Department of Postsecondary Education; to provide for the mission of the university; to create and provide for the governance of the university under the Board of Trustees of Athens State University; to provide for certain powers and duties of the board; to provide for meetings of the board; to provide for a quorum for the transaction of business; to provide for the filling of vacancies on the board and for the creation and use of a nominating committee to fill vacancies on the board; to provide for the appointment and duties of a president of the university; to provide for the employment of suitable persons to act as police officers for the university; and to authorize the Code Commissioner to revise references to Athens State University in the Code of Alabama 1975, as appropriate, to reflect the status of the university under this act.
