Session
Regular Session 2012
Title
Motor vehicles, motorcycles, distinctive license plates authorized, applications to be separate from passenger car applications, number to be based on Quantity Class 2, Sec. 32-6-64 am'd.
Description

Under existing law, the Legislative Oversight Committee on License Plates may consider applications for the creation of license plate categories for passenger cars, pickup trucks, and self-propelled campers or house cars. Applications for the creation of license plate categories for motorcycles may not be considered through this process

This bill would add motorcycles to the list of license plate categories that the committee may consider. This bill would provide that an application for the creation of a motorcycle license plate category would be for Quantity Class 2 only. If the sponsoring organization is applying for both a passenger car plate category and a motorcycle plate category, separate applications would be required to be filed with the committee

The number of commitments to purchase required for both passenger car and motorcycle license plate categories, respectively, would be required to be obtained before the categories would be established and commitments could not be combined in order to reach the required threshold

To amend Section 32-6-64 of the Code of Alabama 1975, relating to motor vehicle distinctive license plates; to authorize the Legislative Oversight Committee on License Plates to consider license plate applications for the creation of license plate categories for motorcycles; to provide that an application for the creation of a motorcycle license plate category would be for Quantity Class 2 only; to provide that if the sponsoring organization is applying for passenger car plate and motorcycle plate categories, separate applications would be required to be filed; to provide that the number of commitments to purchase for both passenger car and motorcycle license plate categories would be required to be obtained before the categories would be established and commitments could not be combined in order to reach the required threshold.
