SB439 Alabama 2012 Session
Bill Summary
Under existing law, license plates for all vehicles except private passenger automobiles and pickup trucks with a gross vehicle weight under 12,000 pounds are valid for one year and are replaced at the end of the period. License plates for private passenger automobiles and pickup trucks with a gross vehicle weight under 12,000 pounds are valid for a period of five years and are replaced at the end of that period.
This bill would delete the existing law and would authorize the Commissioner of Revenue to prescribe the number of years motor vehicle license plates designs would be valid, provided that the minimum period would be five years. This bill would allow license plates of the same design to continue to be used and not replaced. This bill would not apply to a license plate with a permanent design, such as a distinctive license plate.
Relating to motor vehicle license plates; to amend Section 32-6-62, Code of Alabama 1975, to provide that the Commissioner of Revenue may prescribe the number of years motor vehicle license plate designs would be valid.
