A proposed constitutional amendment for Dallas County to allow certain elected or appointed officials to join the Employees' Retirement System of Alabama and to buy service credit for time served.
If approved, the amendment would let eligible Dallas County officials participate in the Employees' Retirement System on the same terms as other county employees and permit them to purchase service credit for their time in office. It would prevent someone from holding a supernumerary office and participating in ERS for the same service; those already in a supernumerary program may continue under that program, but no new supernumerary offices could be created after ratification. It also defines who is eligible (including the sheriff and appointees to complete a term) and who is excluded (e.g., judges, county commissioners, district attorneys, legislators, constables, school board members, or officials elected from a judicial circuit).
