HB40 would require Alabama health insurance plans to cover prostate cancer screening for high-risk men and older men without any out-of-pocket costs, effective October 1, 2026.
If enacted, it would require health insurance plans in Alabama to cover prostate cancer screening for high-risk men over 40 and for all men over 50 without deductibles, coinsurance, copays, or other cost-sharing. High-risk groups include African American men and men who have a father, brother, or son with prostate cancer or who have a known genetic risk marker. Screening would include at minimum a PSA blood test and a digital rectal examination (DRE). The changes would apply to plans issued, delivered, or renewed in Alabama and would take effect on October 1, 2026.
