Senate Transportation and Energy Hearing

SB222 prohibits operating ADS-equipped oversized or overweight vehicles when the movement requires a permit, and limits ADS rules to the ADS chapter without mandating road upgrades.
If an oversized vehicle would require a permit to move, the bill blocks the use of automated driving systems for that vehicle. It makes ADS operation governed exclusively by the ADS chapter and prevents state or local bodies from creating ADS-specific requirements or taxes unless authorized by the chapter. It says the state or local governments are not required to upgrade roads or other transportation infrastructure to accommodate ADS-equipped vehicles. The act would take effect on October 1, 2026.
