SB229 would reorganize the Alabama National Guard’s Legal Services Office into a joint Army/Air National Guard office with clearly defined duties for the General Counsel team and Judge Advocates.
The bill creates a joint Legal Services Office for the Alabama Army and Air National Guard and designates a State Staff Judge Advocate for both. It assigns specific duties to the General Counsel, Deputy General Counsel, and several Associate General Counsels across military justice, contract and fiscal law, administrative and civil law, operational law, and legal assistance, including training and policy development. It also assigns a supervisory structure for Judge Advocates serving Major Commands and Wing units, and clarifies supervision and duties for paralegals and warrant officers. The act would take effect on October 1, 2026.
