Councilor Alemán is the Deputy Director of the Hispanic Interest Coalition of Alabama. He serves on the boards of the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, the Literacy Council of Central Alabama, and Red Mountain Park. He is passionate about education, public outdoor spaces, entrepreneurship and creating opportunities for others. A first-generation immigrant from Nicaragua, Carlos grew up in San Francisco. He received his BA in History and Latin American/Latino Studies from UC Santa Cruz and his Ph.D. in History from Michigan State University. Carlos has lived in West Homewood since 2016 with his wife Mercedes, their daughter Amelia, and dog Lulu.
