Do you remember being a child who learns something exciting at school? I do.

In grade school, I loved books so much that I read my favorite passages to a friend over the telephone (and she read back to me). In middle school, I remember spending long summer afternoons doing algebra on my front porch (for fun!). In high school, I developed important life skills and a quiet new confidence in myself in the marching band.

My name is Stephanie Floyd, of Center Point, Alabama. Today, I am a finance professional, a mother of four, and a Democratic candidate for the Jefferson County Board of Education, District 3, in the primary election to be held May 24, 2022.

I am running for public office because I want to help put our students first and bring back that excitement about learning for each and every one of them.

If you reside in the new District 3, which includes Irondale, Center Point, Fultondale, and portions of surrounding communities, this year, you have a historic chance to make a difference in your child’s education.

For the first time in Jefferson County, the Board of Education moves from At-Large voting to District elections. The May 24 primary will be your opportunity to elect a board member from the new District 3 to represent your neighborhoods and schools.

As a resident, you are aware that we have amazing schools, dedicated families, and rapidly growing communities. Have you wondered, though, if all of our children are getting the very best education that Jefferson County can offer?

I have. I say that as the daughter of a lifelong educator, a perennial student, and a parent who never ceases to learn from her children.
Early in my school life, I developed a passion for academic excellence, went on to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in finance/real estate, a Master’s Degree in corporate finance, and then began work on a PhD. Now, I see “school” from the perspective of a parent who has raised four children, three of whom attended different District 3 high schools.

I was fortunate. Not every student makes it this far. We need to know why, and what we can do differently to position them for success. For example, how many of our children graduate from high school and go on to college or high-paying jobs in the trades, manufacturing, business, professional services, or industry? And how many of them fail to graduate, or graduate and go on to low-paying, hourly jobs with few, if any, benefits?

Yes, I believe that we can do better.

If you agree, take a moment to explore this site and learn more about my campaign, why the county is changing its electoral process, and how important this first election is for District 3. I also have a lot to learn from you, so let me hear from you regarding your concerns, hopes and dreams for our schools.

Please consider donating and/or signing up to volunteer. We need plenty of people working together to take advantage of this awesome opportunity to bring positive change to our new District 3.

Most importantly, I ask for your vote in the primary on May 24. Together, we can make 2022 a turning point in the lives of our children. Together, we are “District 3 strong!”
