At a joint press conference on Monday in Montgomery, eight Alabama sheriffs endorsed Jeff Sessions for U.S. Senate. The sheriffs were: Kevin Turner of Madison County John Samaniego of Shelby County Jonathon W. On Thursday, Governor Kay Ivey announced that twenty-one community service agencies in Alabama will receive $46.2 million in grants to assist low-income families by helping pay their energy bills. The grants were provided by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services through their Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program. The grants were administered by the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs. “Many low-income families in Alabama are forced to weigh between staying warm in their homes or having food and prescription medicine,” Ivey said in a press release. “These grants will help many elderly, disabled and families with children not have to make those choices. Governor Kay Ivey on Tuesday announced that she has awarded grants totaling more than $2.5 million to help homeless Alabamians with immediate housing assistance and to help others who are in danger of becoming homeless. The funding from the federal Emergency Solutions Grant (ESG) program will support organizations across the state that provide shelter, legal and health services, as well as financial education for families and individuals without a residence. For the third year in a row, Rep. Lynn Greer (R-Rogersville) has proposed expanding Alabama’s Stand-Your-Ground law to include legal protection for those using deadly force to protect churches or church members. As the bill has stalled in the house, Greer and six of his colleagues have proposed constitutional amendments for their counties should HB 49 fail to pass again. Greer has gotten HB 461 for Lauderdale County through the house. It now awaits consideration before the Senate Local Legislation Committee. Rep. Danny Crawford (R-Athens) saw his HB 472 pass the Limestone Local Legislation Committee last week and pass the full house on Tuesday.
