ENROLLED, SJR22,
RECOGNIZING MONTGOMERY AS THE CAPITAL OF THE STATE
OF ALABAMA.
WHEREAS, situated in a bend of the Alabama River
near the intersection of two important Native American trading
routes, Montgomery was formed in 1819 by the combination of
two smaller communities; and
WHEREAS, Montgomery's prominence as a place of
commerce rose rapidly, and in 1846 legislators chose it as the
third and final location of Alabama's capital; and
WHEREAS, in 1847, a new capitol building in the
Greek Revival style arose atop "Goat Hill," a grassy hilltop
overlooking Montgomery's main thoroughfare; and
WHEREAS, on December 14, 1849, the 30th anniversary
of statehood, the capitol burned to the ground; builders
completed the current capitol of similar design two years
later; and
WHEREAS, since that time, the capitol complex has
expanded to include more than a dozen buildings in downtown
Montgomery; and

WHEREAS, since 1851, the Alabama State Capitol in
Montgomery has been the seat of government for more than 40
governors and served as the backdrop for some of the most
consequential events in Alabama and American history, from the
Civil War to the Civil Rights Movement; and
WHEREAS, designated in 1960 as an Historic Landmark
Building, the capitol also serves as a museum managed by the
Alabama Historical Commission; and
WHEREAS, Alabama is currently engaged in a
commemoration of the bicentennial of statehood, a three-year
celebration of the people, places, and events that form our
rich history; now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, BOTH
HOUSES THEREOF CONCURRING, That we do hereby recognize
Montgomery as the capital of the State of Alabama.
