ENROLLED, House Joint Resolution,
COMMENDING DORANN TANNER ON HER SELECTION AS
NATIONAL SCHOOL SOCIAL WORKER OF 2018.
WHEREAS, it is with immense pleasure that we commend
Dorann Tanner on her selection as National School Social
Worker of 2018; and
WHEREAS, Dorann Tanner, Alabaster City Schools'
coordinator of student services, won the award on January 22,
2018, after she was nominated in January 2017, by Dr. Kay
Warfield with the Alabama Department of Education's Prevention
and Support Services Department; and
WHEREAS, the School Social Work Association of
America (SSWAA) has been presenting the School Social Worker
of the Year award since 2012, and Tanner is the first person
from a southern state to win the award; she joins previous
winners from Minnesota, Maryland, Illinois, and Washington;
and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Tanner has initiated and shared many
best practices across the state, such as therapy dog projects,
the role of school social workers as they collaborate,
coordinate and communicate as part of the response
intervention team, impact on school attendance and discipline
intervention and by reducing the number of students who drop

out of school; Alabama ranked third in the nation for reducing
school dropouts in 2012, and this major contribution was
evident by the work of school social workers; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Tanner worked with the Jefferson
County Department of Human Resources from 2003-2004, the
Developing Alabama Youth Foundation from 2004-2008 and Shelby
County Schools from 2008-2013; she joined the Alabaster City
School System in 2013; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Tanner will be honored for receiving
the national award during the School Social Work Association
of America's national conference in Columbus, Ohio, from March
14-17, 2018; and
WHEREAS, because of Mrs. Tanner's contributions, the
graduation rate soared to 97 percent in the Alabaster City
School system; she is an excellent communicator with students,
parents and school staff, and strives to be fair and helpful;
now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, BOTH
HOUSES THEREOF CONCURRING, That in recognition and gratitude
for outstanding contributions to education, and upon receipt
of the 2018 National School Social Worker Award, we hereby
most highly honor Mrs. Dorann Tanner to whom a copy of this
resolution shall be provided with tribute and esteem.
