ENROLLED, House Joint Resolution,
NAMING A PORTION OF HIGHWAY 80 IN MACON COUNTY THE
HAROLD DEON POWELL MEMORIAL HIGHWAY.
WHEREAS, Harold Deon Powell served the people of
Macon County, Alabama, as Town Clerk of Shorter and as
Secretary-Treasurer of the Macon County Economic Development
Authority; he died unexpectedly in November 2017, while on an
economic development trip to the Leonardo Company in Italy
with state officials; and
WHEREAS, a licensed real estate broker, instructor,
and founder of Powell Properties, Powell was committed to
community service and worked diligently to make a difference;
he was active in politics and served as the first African
American National Vice President and later as President of the
College Democrats of America; and
WHEREAS, Powell was educated in the public school
system in Macon County and attended Tuskegee University; he
spent his lifetime helping to revitalize Macon County,
including recruiting for jobs, retail, and infrastructure; and
WHEREAS, he was committed to business recruitment,
including with the Leonardo Company, an aircraft company that
now plans to build a multimillion dollar T-100 aircraft

manufacturing factory near the Tuskegee Airmen's National
Historical Site; and
WHEREAS, it is fitting to honor the memory of Harold
Deon Powell near the place where he impacted the lives of so
many people in Macon County, Alabama; now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, BOTH
HOUSES THEREOF CONCURRING, That in memory of his dedication
and service to the citizens of the Town of Shorter and Macon
County, Alabama, we declare that the portion of U.S. Highway
rom the intersection of County Road 7 to Exit 22 of
Interstate 85 in Macon County is named the Harold Deon Powell
Memorial Highway.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that, the appropriate
officials be requested to place and maintain signs or markers
as provided in this resolution.
