HJR2 189513-3 By Representative Sanderford RFD: First Read: 09-JAN-18 HJR2 ENROLLED, House Joint Resolution, RECOGNIZING COMMAND SERGEANT MAJOR BENNIE G. ADKINS ON RECEIVING THE MEDAL OF HONOR. WHEREAS, it is a tremendous privilege to recognize Command Sergeant Major Bennie G. Adkins on receiving the Medal of Honor in 2014, awarded by President Barack Obama; and WHEREAS, the Medal of Honor is the United States military's highest decoration and is awarded by the President, on behalf of Congress, to members of the Armed Forces who distinguish themselves conspicuously by gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of life above and beyond the call of duty during service; and WHEREAS, a resident of Opelika, Alabama, Command Sergeant Major Bennie G. Adkins earned the honor based on his immense valor while serving as an Intelligence Sergeant with Detachment A-102, 5th Special Forces Group, 1st Special Forces, during combat operations against an armed enemy at Camp A Shau, Republic of Vietnam from March 9-12, 1966; and WHEREAS, Command Sergeant Major Bennie G. Adkins manned a mortar position in the midst of intense enemy fire, carried wounded comrades to safety, and demonstrated numerous other valiant acts; he finally led his group of soldiers in evading the enemy until their rescue by helicopter on March HJR2 12, 1966; estimations reveal he eliminated between 135 and 175 soldiers of the enemy and incurred 18 different wounds; and WHEREAS, Command Sergeant Major Bennie G. Adkins is the epitome of a hero; although his great sacrifices during his service can never be fully repaid, our state is forever grateful for his brave efforts to preserve freedom for all; and WHEREAS, our great state and country are indebted to the heroic actions of Command Sergeant Major Bennie G. Adkins whose courage and fortitude are unsurpassed; now therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, BOTH HOUSES THEREOF CONCURRING, That Command Sergeant Major Bennie G. Adkins is highly honored and commended, and this resolution is offered in deepest admiration and appreciation for his valorous service, as well as with sincere best wishes for continued success in all future endeavors. HJR2 Speaker of the House of Representatives President and Presiding Officer of the Senate House of Representatives I hereby certify that the within Act originated in and was adopted by the House 09-JAN-18.
