ENROLLED, House Joint Resolution,
COMMENDING MRS. JANE J. MITCHELL ON THE OCCASION OF
HER 100TH BIRTHDAY.
WHEREAS, highest commendations are herein proudly
presented to Mrs. Jane J. Mitchell on the occasion of her
100th Birthday on February 25, 2018; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Mitchell was born February 25, 1918,
to the union of Willie Gaston and Lena Washington Mitchell in
Koenton, Alabama; when her mother passed away before her
second birthday, she went to live with her great-grandparents,
Will and Georgiana Jackson; and
WHEREAS, after the death of her great-grandfather,
Mrs. Mitchell's great-grandmother, Grandma Georgiana, a
Cherokee from South Carolina, reared her alone; during the
winter of 1924 when she was six-years-old, Mrs. Mitchell
attended Rosenwald School in Koenton, Alabama, where Johnny
Raine served as principal and her first grade teacher was Ms.
Virginia Washington; and
WHEREAS, she attended school through the eleventh
grade; she owned only one dress, which she wore with cotton
stockings and brogans; her favorite subjects were math,
spelling, and reading; many years later, she obtained her GED;
she took 32 lessons in Nursing and received her certificate,

and she attended evening classes at Bishop State Community
College, where she majored in Elementary Education; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Mitchell met her husband, Arthella,
during a revival at True Light Baptist Church in September
1935, and the couple was united in Holy matrimony in Koenton,
Alabama, by Reverend A.D. Fox; their union was blessed with 13
children; one foster child; 78 grandchildren; 162
great-grandchildren; 105 great-great-grandchildren; and one
great-great-great-grandchild; they were married until
Arthella's death on September 25, 2005; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Mitchell began working at the
Washington County Hospital in 1961; she and Arthella moved
from Koenton, Alabama, to Chatom, Alabama, in 1962, where Mrs.
Mitchell worked at the hospital for six years; in 1969, Jane
entered employment with the United States Postal Service,
where she worked 15 years; she served as a substitute teacher
for the Washington County Public School System from 1981 until
1984; in 1984, she became Pastor of the Church of God
Deliverance in Chatom, Alabama; while serving as pastor, she
worked part-time at Chatom's Nutrition Center; she remained
Pastor until September 2015 when she turned the church over to
her grandson, Bishop Roger Kirksey; and
WHEREAS, Mr. and Mrs. Mitchell lived exemplary lives
of integrity for their children to witness the way of
righteousness in practice; they taught and exemplified strong

Christian values for their children; Mrs. Mitchell had five
brothers, ML, Milton, Void, Dan, and Charlie; and three
sisters, Ida Lee, Ivy, and Bessie; and
WHEREAS, a 100th Birthday is a significant milestone
that represents a century's worth of wisdom earned and
memories gained and is a cause for great rejoicing; it is a
tremendous privilege to recognize a remarkable lady such as
Mrs. Jane J. Mitchell on her special day; now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, BOTH
HOUSES THEREOF CONCURRING, That Mrs. Jane J. Mitchell is
highly honored and commended, and this resolution is offered
to her in highest tribute, as well as with sincere best wishes
for continued prosperity and blessings.
