HJR3 189511-2 By Representative Sanderford RFD: First Read: 09-JAN-18 HJR3 ENROLLED, House Joint Resolution, RECOGNIZING LIEUTENANT COLONEL JAMES MICHAEL SPRAYBERRY ON RECEIVING THE MEDAL OF HONOR. WHEREAS, it is a tremendous privilege to recognize Lieutenant Colonel James Michael Sprayberry on receiving the Medal of Honor in 1969, awarded by President Richard Nixon; and WHEREAS, the Medal of Honor is the United States military's highest decoration and is awarded by the President, on behalf of Congress to members of the Armed Forces who distinguish themselves conspicuously by gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of life above and beyond the call of duty during service; and WHEREAS, reared in Sylacauga, Alabama, Lieutenant Colonel James Michael Sprayberry joined the Army in Montgomery in 1967; he served as a first lieutenant in Company D, 5th Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Calvary Division (Airmobile) in Vietnam; and WHEREAS, Lieutenant Colonel James Michael Sprayberry's valiant acts in 1968 included leading a nighttime patrol to rescue wounded soldiers, personally destroying several enemy bunkers and machine gun emplacements, HJR3 eliminating 12 enemy soldiers, and directing isolated men to safety; and WHEREAS, continuing to serve this great nation until his retirement in 1988, Lieutenant Colonel James Michael Sprayberry is the epitome of a hero; although his great sacrifices during his service can never be fully repaid, our state is forever grateful for his brave efforts to preserve freedom for all; and WHEREAS, our great state and country are indebted to the selfless actions of Lieutenant Colonel James Michael Sprayberry whose courage and fortitude are unsurpassed; now therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, BOTH HOUSES THEREOF CONCURRING, That Lieutenant Colonel James Michael Sprayberry is highly honored and commended, and this resolution is offered in deepest admiration and appreciation for his valorous service, as well as with sincere best wishes for continued success in all future endeavors. HJR3 Speaker of the House of Representatives President and Presiding Officer of the Senate House of Representatives I hereby certify that the within Act originated in and was adopted by the House 09-JAN-18.
