ENROLLED, House Joint Resolution,
MOURNING THE DEATH AND CELEBRATING THE LIFE OF MR.
WILLIAM JESSIE WHEAT.
WHEREAS, we are deeply saddened to learn of the
death of Mr. William Jessie Wheat of Chatom, Alabama, on
January 6, 2018, at 84 years of age, and we uplift his
inspiring life and legacy with utmost reverence and respect;
and
WHEREAS, the passing of Mr. William Jessie Wheat
leaves a void in the lives of his loving family, many friends,
and the entire community, where he was highly regarded; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Wheat was born March 30, 1933, to the
union of Joe and Viola Burroughs Wheat; he proudly served four
years in the United States Navy and provided exceptional
service as the town marshal and Chief of Police of Chatom; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Wheat was a charter member of the
Fraternal Order of Police and became Chief Deputy of the
Washington County Sheriff's Department, serving under Henry
Clay Locke and Judson Sullivan; for 32 years, he served as the
Washington County Sheriff; and
WHEREAS, survivors include his beloved and devoted
wife of 60 years, Claudia Louise Wheat; children, Greg
(Janice) Wheat, Becky (Randy) Waddill, Misty (Mark) Davis;

grandchildren, Cristie McKenzie, Erica Adame, Natosha
Davidson, Stephanie Davidson, Jessica Sullivan, Bruce Davis,
and Justin Davis; and numerous great-grandchildren; and one
great-great-grandchild; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Wheat was a valued member of the
community; although his presence is greatly missed, his memory
is cherished in the hearts and minds of all those who were
fortunate enough to know him; now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, BOTH
HOUSES THEREOF CONCURRING, That while grieving the death of
Mr. William Jessie Wheat, we are extremely grateful for his
abundant life, and we offer this resolution in highest tribute
to his legacy, as well as in heartfelt sympathy to his family
and friends.
