RECOGNIZING SIGMA DAY AT THE STATE CAPITOL ON MARCH
15, 2018, AND HONORING PHI BETA SIGMA FRATERNITY,
INCORPORATED.
WHEREAS, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity is an
international fraternity with more than 100,000 members in the
United States, the Caribbean, Europe, and Africa; and
WHEREAS, Phi Beta Sigma became known as the
fraternity of Kings as a result of three African leaders in
Nigeria and Liberia being members of Phi Beta Sigma
Fraternity; and
WHEREAS, for more than 15 years, Phi Beta Sigma has
sponsored Tuggle Elementary School Day at the Alabama
Legislature, an event held in honor of a longtime teacher at
Tuggle Elementary School, Ms. Mary King; and
WHEREAS, Sigma brother, the Honorable Rod Scott,
serves in the House of Representatives, as did the late
Speaker Pro Tempore, Demetrius C. Newton, who also served as
the 24th International President of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity,
Incorporated; and
WHEREAS, Phi Beta Sigma has been in the forefront of
Education and Business Development, living up to its motto:
"Culture for service and service to humanity;" now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF
THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, That in recognition of these
worthy endeavors and history of community service, this
resolution is offered in highest tribute to the fraternity,
and a copy of this resolution shall be presented to the
Honorable Michael E. Cristal, International President of Phi
Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., and Joseph T. Alexander, Jr.,
State Director of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity.
