WHEREAS, it is with profound sorrow that we note the death on December 20, 2017, of Mrs. Polly Torti Lucas of Huntsville, Alabama, at the age of 96 years; and WHEREAS, her passing leaves a void in the lives of her loving family, many friends, and the entire community, where she was highly regarded; and WHEREAS, Mrs. Lucas was the second child born to Maurice Leo Torti and Leah Dovey Glidewell on January 21, 1920, in Memphis, Tennessee, and WHEREAS, she was a graduate of Messick High School in Memphis, Tennessee; she earned her Bachelor of Science Degree with a double major in mathematics and chemistry from Memphis State University, now known as University of Memphis; and WHEREAS, she was active in Phi Beta Chi (honorary science society), the Latin Club, the Episcopal Club, Kappa Lambda Sigma, and was selected for Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges; and WHEREAS, her professional career included teaching in Memphis city schools, Nashville city schools, and Ward Belmont College in Nashville, Tennessee; and WHEREAS, Mrs. Lucas was a faithful member of First Baptist Church where she served on many committees including the personnel committee, of which she was chairman; and WHEREAS, she was preceded in death by her parents; son, William Ray Lucas, Jr., and sister-in-law, Sue Lucas Moore; and WHEREAS, survivors include her husband of more than ears, William Ray Lucas; daughter, Donna Lucas Watts (Vernon); son, Michael Lee Lucas (Sue Ellen); daughter-in-law, Janet Lucas Beck; grandchildren, Emily Watts Blenner (Tim), Kenan Lucas (Catherine), Marguerite Lucas Armitage (Thom), John Watts (Mitra), Alice Lucas, and Michael Lucas, Jr., (Whitney); great-grandchildren, Michael and Sarah Blenner, and Holmes, Malcom, and Gwen Lucas; sister, Alice Torti Neel; brother, Maurice Torti, Jr., (Nancy); nephew, Spurgeon Neel, III; niece, Leah Neel Zartarian (Gary); and great-nephews, Gregory Zartarian and Geoffrey Zartarian; and WHEREAS, although her presence will be greatly missed, the memory of Mrs. Lucas will be cherished in the hearts of all who knew and loved her; now therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, That the death of Mrs. Polly Torti Lucas is recorded with deep sadness, and this resolution is offered in tribute to her life and with heartfelt sympathy to her family, whose grief is shared by many.
