Allows the Madison County Sheriff to run a jail store and a phone/messaging system for inmates, with the money from these activities kept in a special account for law enforcement use.
The sheriff is authorized to operate a jail store and an inmate telephone/messaging system at the Madison County Jail. Money collected must go into the Sheriff’s Jail Account in a Madison County bank chosen by the sheriff, and any profits can be used exclusively for law enforcement purposes in the public interest, at the sheriff's discretion. The Madison County Commission will establish and maintain the account, and funds from before the act will be transferred into it; this does not replace other sheriff funding. The sheriff must maintain detailed records, and the Department of Examiners of Public Accounts will audit the account as part of the sheriff's office audits, with a copy of the audit sent to the sheriff.
