Session
Regular Session 2021
Title
Primary and runoff election date, primary election held second Tuesday in July and runoff election held second Tuesday in August for 2022 election cycle.
Description

Under existing law, upon receiving dicennial census redistricting data from the U.S. Census Bureau, the Legislature must redraw Congressional districts and state legislative districts and pass redistricting legislation. By federal law, the U.S

Census Bureau is required to send redistricting data to the states by April 1, 2021; however, the U.S. Census Bureau announced that it will not be sending this redistricting data to states until September 30, 2021. After that date, the Legislature must pass redistricting legislation

This delayed date will affect the election cycle for the 2022 general election

Under existing law, primary elections, except in years when there is a presidential primary, are held on the fourth Tuesday in May and primary runoff elections are held four weeks later

This bill would provide that only during the 2022 election cycle, the primary election shall be held on the second Tuesday in July

This bill would provide for a one time occurrence

Relating to elections; to revise the date of the 2022 primary election and primary runoff election, and to provide that this is a one time occurrence.
