HB130 would ban classroom instruction or discussions about gender identity and sexual orientation for kindergarten through eighth grade in public Alabama schools and prohibit displaying related flags or insignia, with enforcement rules starting October 1, 2024.
If passed, the bill would prevent teachers and other public K-12 staff from providing instruction or discussions about gender identity or sexual orientation to students in kindergarten through eighth grade, unless those discussions are age-appropriate and developmentally appropriate per state standards. It would also bar the display of flags or insignia related to gender identity or sexual orientation in classrooms or on school property. The State Board of Education would be required to create rules to implement and enforce these changes. The changes would take effect on October 1, 2024.
