ENROLLED, SJR100,
HONORING MRS. ALICE GRIGGS CUMBUS ON THE OCCASION OF
CELEBRATING HER 100TH BIRTHDAY.
WHEREAS, it is a great pleasure to extend
commendations and congratulations to Mrs. Alice Griggs Cumbus
of Montgomery, Alabama, on the occasion of celebrating her
100th Birthday; and
WHEREAS, she was born to Ben Hybert Griggs and
Bertha Ott Griggs on March 18, 1918, in Montgomery, Alabama;
she had one sibling, Benye Griggs Harris; and
WHEREAS, she attended Highland Avenue Elementary
School, Capitol Heights Junior High School the first year it
was opened, graduated from Sidney Lanier High School in 1935,
and attended Huntingdon College from 1935 to 1937; and
WHEREAS, on April 9, 1939, she married Alton Beverly
Cumbus at Highland Avenue Baptist Church; they were married
for 70 years; together they had two children, Beverly Cumbus
Schauer (Monty) and Benjamin Joseph Cumbus (Virginia); and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Cumbus has traveled extensively
throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico; she has also

visited Iceland, Luxembourg, Germany, Austria, Switzerland,
France, Italy, Spain, The Netherlands, Greece, and Israel; and
WHEREAS, from 1918 to 1979, Mrs. Cumbus was an
active member at Highland Avenue Baptist Church, where she
served as a Sunday School Teacher, Leader in Girl's Auxiliary,
President of the Women's Missionary Union, and leader of
Baptist Young People's Union and teacher; from 1979 to 2016,
she was a member of the McGhee Road Baptist Church, where she
served as Superintendent of Sunday School, member of the
Alabama Baptist State Board of Missions, and Supervisor of
Greeters; she is currently a member of Heritage Baptist
Church; and
WHEREAS, through the years, Mrs. Cumbus has earned
respect and admiration for her indomitable spirit and she
remains a source of inspiration to all those who are fortunate
to know her; now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, BOTH
HOUSES THEREOF CONCURRING, That Mrs. Alice Griggs Cumbus is
honored and commended on the occasion of celebrating the
milestone of her 100th Birthday, and this resolution is
offered in highest tribute to her remarkable life, along with
heartiest congratulations and best wishes for the future.
