HJR128 190928-1 By Representatives Lovvorn, Warren, Blackshear and Whorton (I) RFD: Rules First Read: 01-FEB-18 190928-1:n:01/31/2018:AR/ar LSA2018-567 COMMENDING JAY JONES ON HIS SELECTION AS SHERIFF OF THE YEAR. WHEREAS, highest commendations are herein proudly presented to Jay Jones on his selection as Sheriff of the Year during the Alabama Sheriff's Association winter conference on January 23, 2018; and WHEREAS, since 2015, the association has awarded the Robert D. Timmons Sheriff of the Year Award to a sheriff involving a process of nomination votes from the 67 sheriff's across the state; the award is named after Robert D. Timmons, the sole Executive Director of the Alabama Sheriff's Association since 1975; and WHEREAS, Sheriff Jones' dedication and perseverance to go beyond the normal duties of sheriff is why he was selected for the award; and WHEREAS, Sheriff Jones began his law enforcement career at the Lee County Sheriff's Office in 1975 while a student at Auburn University; his first duties were as a corrections officer and a communications operator at the county jail; and WHEREAS, he earned his Bachelor of Science Degree from Auburn University in 1976 and his Master's Degree from Troy State University in 1980; and WHEREAS, Mr. Jones was elected Lee County Sheriff in 1988 and is currently serving his fifth term; and WHEREAS, he has displayed dedication and professionalism in all that he does and he has an unwavering commitment to the community; and WHEREAS, Sheriff Jones serves on the boards of the United Way Lee County, the Lee County Youth Development Center, the Lee County Emergency Communications District and the Domestic Violence Intervention Center; and WHEREAS, additionally, he works with local nonprofits, serving as a trustee for the Tallapoosa County Girls Ranch, and as a member of the Board of Directors of Storybook Farm; and WHEREAS, Sheriff Jones served as an adjunct instructor of criminal justice at Auburn University and Southern Union Community College; now therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, BOTH HOUSES THEREOF CONCURRING, That Sheriff Jay Jones is highly honored and commended, and this resolution is offered to him in deepest admiration and appreciation for his immeasurable service, as well as with sincere best wishes for continued success in all future endeavors.
