WHEREAS, it is a tremendous privilege to recognize Captain Gary Michael Rose on receiving the Medal of Honor in 2017, awarded by President Donald Trump; and WHEREAS, the Medal of Honor is the United States military's highest decoration and is awarded by the President, on behalf of Congress, to members of the Armed Forces who distinguish themselves conspicuously by gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of life above and beyond the call of duty during service; and WHEREAS, a resident of Huntsville, Alabama, Captain Gary Michael Rose earned the honor based on his display of immense valor in 1970, while serving as a sergeant and the only Green Beret medic during Operation Tailwind, which is hailed as one of the most successful covert operations conducted during the eight-year secret war under the aegis of the Military Assistance Command Vietnam-Studies and Observations Group; and WHEREAS, Captain Gary Michael Rose was one of 16 Green Berets who joined 120 indigenous troops on the four-day suicide mission deep into Laos; as the sole medic on the mission, he kept the wounded alive, including three critically wounded indigenous soldiers, while ignoring serious wounds to his own foot, arm, hand, and back; he maintained a code of silence about the mission for more than 20 years; and WHEREAS, retiring from the Army in 1987, Captain Gary Michael Rose is the epitome of a hero; although his great sacrifices during his service can never be fully repaid, our state is forever grateful for his brave efforts to preserve freedom for all; and WHEREAS, our great state and country are indebted to the heroic actions of Captain Gary Michael Rose whose courage and fortitude are unsurpassed; now therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, That Captain Gary Michael Rose is highly honored and commended, and this resolution is offered in deepest admiration and appreciation for his valorous service, as well as with sincere best wishes for continued success in all future endeavors.
