MOURNING THE DEATH OF MRS. MARTHA BELVIN DIXON.
WHEREAS, it is with profound sorrow that we note the
death on December 16, 2017, of Mrs. Martha Belvin Dixon of
Andalusia, Alabama, at the age of 102 years; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Dixon was born on September 1, 1915,
in Covington County to Robert L. Belvin and Fannie Brewer
Belvin; she was educated in Andalusia City Schools; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Dixon was a proud veteran, serving in
the United States Army during World War II in the
Meteorological Service at the Pentagon; and
WHEREAS, after the war she returned to Andalusia,
completed Andalusia Business School, and was employed at
Alatex Manufacturing Company for 32 years until her retirement
in 1969; and
WHEREAS, she and her husband, Solon, were great
benefactors to many causes in the country and region through
both personal funds and through the Solon and Martha Dixon
Foundation, with special interest in support of education at
all levels, natural resources conservation, the arts, and
health and welfare; and
WHEREAS, Auburn University, Lurleen B. Wallace
Community College, Lyman Ward Academy, and Camp ASCA were
particular regional interests; and
WHEREAS, their gifts of land, funds, and other
support made possible the Solon Dixon Forestry Education
Center, which is the premiere field forestry and wildlife
conservation education facility in the nation; and
WHEREAS, she was preceded in death by her parents;
sister, Allie Dunn; and husband, Solon Dixon; and
WHEREAS, survivors include a special friend, Joyce
Sharpe, and a host of devoted friends; and
WHEREAS, although her presence will be greatly
missed, the memory of Mrs. Dixon will be cherished in the
hearts of all who knew and loved her; now therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF
THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, That the death of Mrs. Martha
Belvin Dixon is recorded with deep sadness, and this
resolution is offered in tribute to her life and with
heartfelt sympathy to her family, whose grief is shared by
many.
