HB149 sets specific sheriff qualifications and a mandatory annual continuing education requirement for the St. Clair County sheriff.
If passed, the bill would require anyone running for or holding the sheriff’s office in St. Clair County to meet strict qualifications (US citizenship, at least one year of county residency, high school diploma or GED, age 30+, at least five years of full-time law enforcement experience certified by the Alabama POST Commission, and no felony conviction). It also requires the sheriff to complete at least 12 hours of continuing education each year, approved by the Alabama Sheriffs Association or the National Sheriffs' Association, with proof filed by December 31 each year. The act applies only to St. Clair County and becomes effective on the first day of the third month after it passes and is approved.
