SB304 adds stricter minimum qualifications for Hale County Sheriff candidates and appointees, including citizenship, residency, voting status, age, education, law enforcement experience, and ongoing training.
If enacted, the act requires anyone qualifying for election or appointed as Hale County Sheriff to meet several new criteria in addition to existing law. They must be a United States citizen, have lived in Hale County for at least one year before qualification or appointment, and be a registered voter in Hale County for at least one year before qualification or appointment. They must be at least 25 years old and have a high school diploma or GED, plus at least three years of full-time law enforcement experience and no felony conviction. It also requires the sheriff to complete 12 hours of executive-level continuing education each year, with proof filed with the county judge of probate by December 31.
