Teamwork on road construction

Governor Kay Ivey and the Alabama Department of Transportation on Thursday announced that $7 million in funding is being awarded to cities and counties for various local road and bridge projects. The funding is made available through the Annual Grant Program, a new program created under the Rebuild Alabama Act. The Rebuild Alabama Act requires ALDOT to establish an annual program setting aside $10 million off the top of the state’s share of new gas tax revenue for local road and bridge projects. “An investment in our roads and bridges is an investment in the future of Alabama. These $7 million in funds will go a long way in helping communities across the state address various road and bridge projects,” Governor Ivey said. “I am…

House is sold

ValleyMLS.com and the Huntsville Area Association of REALTORS® (HAAR) reported today that the number of active available listings of homes for sale in Madison County sits at 988, a figure lower than the Multiple Listing Service (MLS) has seen since 1998 when inventory data was first recorded. The area’s recent success in job and population growth has led to low housing inventory numbers, with new construction and skilled labor to build new houses have battled to keep up with the trend. “Today’s inventory milestone tells us that, whether you’re expanding or downsizing, there has never been a better time to sell a home,” said Cindi Peters-Tanner, 2020 ValleyMLS.com Chair. ”If you were on the fence, these numbers should tell you that now is the time to find a…

A lightbulb on dollar bill, energy saving concept

On Thursday, Governor Kay Ivey announced that twenty-one community service agencies in Alabama will receive $46.2 million in grants to assist low-income families by helping pay their energy bills. The grants were provided by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services through their Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program. The grants were administered by the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs. “Many low-income families in Alabama are forced to weigh between staying warm in their homes or having food and prescription medicine,” Ivey said in a press release. “These grants will help many elderly, disabled and families with children not have to make those choices. Here is the list of Alabama agencies receiving grant money and the respective amounts they are receiving: Community Action…

According to the Alabama Department of Revenue, Madison Wholesalers Inc. plead guilty to evading tobacco taxes from 2013-2016 through the use of fake invoices to hide what was being purchased from the company in Pennsylvania. Tobacco taxes are levied against the person or entity that imports the product into the state. The false invoices used by Madison Wholesalers Inc. resulted in unreported taxes of $119,937. “The failure to pay the tobacco tax due saved Madison Wholesalers thousands of dollars and allowed them to sell tobacco products at a significantly lower price than their competitors,” the revenue department said in a statement. The company will pay restitution of $214,606 in taxes, penalties, and interest to the state. Madison County Circuit Judge Claude Hundley III also prohibited…

Kay Ivey

Governor Kay Ivey on Tuesday, following the round of severe weather that impacted portions of Alabama, issued the following statement: “This morning, I began the process of calling local leaders who were affected by last night’s storm. I join the community of Town Creek in grieving the loss of a husband and wife. While most of us slept through the storm, a family is waking up today devastated. I will be praying for their family and the community, and I offer any assistance from the state that is available as they start the process of rebuilding. “I urge everyone to remember those who were affected, whether it be those who have lost family members, those who were injured or those who lost their homes. We…

This month business leaders from around the state gathered in Birmingham at the Alabama Economic Growth Summit to discuss how our state can continue to grow jobs and build our economy to be competitive across the country. The aerospace industry was among the leading topics of discussion at this summit because it is a key job creator and economic engine in our state. The aerospace and defense industries support over 60,000 jobs in Alabama. Alabama ranks in the top five states in the U.S. with the highest number of aerospace engineers. But this didn’t happen overnight. Our state has a long and rich history in this industry. NASA’s Saturn V rocket and the technological advances that helped put Americans on the Moon were created in…
