HB507 adds new qualifications for Marion County sheriff candidates and requires annual executive-level training for the sheriff.
It requires anyone seeking the Marion County sheriff office, or appointed to serve as sheriff, to meet a list of minimum qualifications beyond other existing laws. The qualifications include US citizenship, at least one year of Marion County residency, being an eligible voter registered in Marion County for at least one year, a high school diploma or GED, age 25 or older, at least three years of full-time law enforcement service with arrest power certified by the Alabama POST Commission, and no felony convictions. It also requires either no more than two consecutive years away from full-time active law enforcement, or if more than two years, recertification from POST before qualification or appointment. The bill also requires the Marion County Sheriff to complete at least 12 hours of executive-level continuing education each year, approved by major sheriff associations or other recognized providers.
