Republican U.S. Senate candidate Dale Deas says a nonprofit veterans forum in Spanish Fort removed him from its April 7 program after its executive director endorsed rival Jared Hudson. Deas is demanding to be restored to the lineup and says he will file an IRS complaint if that does not happen.

Lawmakers logged 521 roll call votes, passed 10 bills through a chamber and saw 66 bills signed into law, led by a new PSC oversight law and criminal penalties bills.

Democrat Hanu Karlapalem formally opened his campaign for Alabama House District 4 in Madison and challenged Republican incumbent Parker Moore to three debates ahead of the Nov. 3 general election. Karlapalem used the event to outline his opposition to SB21, the CHOOSE Act and rising household costs.

A bill introduced in the Alabama House would suspend the state’s gasoline and motor fuel taxes from April 15 through June 15, 2026. The proposal would temporarily remove 30 cents per gallon on gasoline and 31 cents per gallon on motor fuels if lawmakers approve it.

A House bill by Rep. Mike Shaw would phase out Alabama’s state sales tax on food over several years and let cities and counties adopt their own local exemptions beginning in 2029. The proposal is now before the House Ways and Means Education Committee.

Rep. Kelvin Datcher has introduced a bill that would give some Alabama taxpayers a one-time state income tax credit for the 2025 tax year. The proposal ties the credit to a taxpayer’s 2024 state income tax liability and sets maximum amounts based on filing status.

The Athens City Council will hold a public hearing April 27 on a proposed zoning change that would allow data centers as a conditional use in the city’s heavy industrial district. The proposal follows a favorable recommendation from the city’s planning commission in March.

Democratic Alabama Supreme Court candidate AshLeigh Dunham plans three public stops in Montgomery on Wednesday, including events focused on IVF protections, voting rights, and organized labor. The visit comes as the 2026 race for Alabama Supreme Court Place 1 begins to take shape.

Madison Democrat Hanu Karlapalem has scheduled a public campaign kickoff event for April 4 as he challenges Rep. Parker Moore, R-Decatur, in Alabama House District 4. The district includes parts of Madison, Limestone and Morgan counties.

Republican U.S. Senate candidate Dale Deas said he filed a federal campaign finance complaint against Republican rival Jared Hudson and Hudson’s campaign committee. The Federal Election Commission assigned the case Matter Under Review 8449 and will notify the respondents as it begins its preliminary review.
